Program Description

Medical emergencies in the office can and do happen and with advances in medicine, longer life spans, poly-pharmacy, and the increased prevalence of chronic diseases, we are treating more and more complex patients. Dentists should have the basic knowledge to recognize, assess and manage a potentially life-threatening situation until EMS arrives and the patient can be transported to a medical facility. Typically, these tragic events happen through no fault of one’s own, but it’s critical to be prepared and know how to give the patient the best chance of recovery.

This lecture will review aspects of prevention, office preparedness and development of an emergency response team, a recommended basic emergency drug and equipment kit, activation of emergency medical services, basic life support, and management of some of the potential medical emergencies encountered in the dental office.

Topics include:

  • Statistics on office preparedness for emergencies
  • Prevention
  • Pre-syncope/Syncope
  • Orthostatic hypotension
  • Hyperventilation crisis
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Hypertensive urgency/emergency
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Seizures
  • Allergy/Anaphylaxis
  • Drug overdose
