Program Information: 

HPV, Etiologies and Management of Dry Mouth

This presentation begins with a review of the etiology of dry mouth and includes discussion on the epidemiology of HPV and oropharyngeal cancer. The impact of dry mouth on patients, and options for the management of dry mouth and its sequelae are then addressed, including the prevention

of oral disease. This is followed by a discussion on the role of dental professionals in patient education, barriers and the prevention of HPV-associated cancer..

Learning Objectives:

After attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

List etiologies associated with dry mouth

Review the epidemiology and role of HPV in oropharyngeal cancer;

List and describe options for the management of dry mouth

Describe the role of dental professionals in educating patients on HPV and vaccination.

An Update on Vaping

Vaping became a popular habit, in particular among teenagers and young adults. This presentation discusses trends in vaping, ingredients, advertising, and misperceptions. A review of the health risks of these substances and results for tobacco cessation compared to other options are also addressed. We will also review adverse events, patient information, recent issues and legislation in Canada.

Learning Objectives:

After attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

Describe trends in vaping, e-cigarettes and potential health risks;

Review vaping and other options with respect to tobacco cessation and available evidence; and,

Describe information that can be provided to patients on vaping

Bio

Dr. Collins has given presentations in North America, Europe, the Pacific Rim and the Middle East. Her topics include infection control, the prevention and management of oral disease, HPV and dry mouth, and vaping. She is the ADA representative to the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), a member of the ADA, OSAP, a participant in Standards working groups in AAMI, and a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Fiona is also a consultant for Dental Advisor. During her career, she has lived and worked in 5 countries and has held positions in clinical practice, academia, consulting and the dental industry. Dr. Collins graduated as a general dentist from the University of Glasgow (Scotland) and holds an MBA and an MA from Boston University in the US.
